Better For You, Better For The Planet – DIY Beauty

We love a good beauty moment! And what better way to take care of your body & skin than with handmade and natural products?

The Soap Kitchen is our number one stop for soap, essential oils and bath products. Everything is homemade right there in the shop and  oh soap pretty (we stop by and sniff often).

But we also love to be creative and experiment with natural products. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites that you can make at home. They also all make nifty gifts for the holiday season! Your co-workers, PTA group members or kid’s teachers will love these homemade, thoughtful gifts.

Lavender oil has a delicate, relaxing smell. Always takes us to a calm, happy place. And making Lavender Oil is simple. All you need are two ingredients: dried lavender and liquid coconut oil. Start by drying at least one ounce of lavender (or you can buy at dried at most farmer’s markets). Add the stems, flowers or just the seeds to a glass jar (mason jar or bigger). Pour the coconut oil over the lavender until covered (use a funnel so you don’t make a mess). Store the glass by a window for 7 to 10 days to let infuse, shaking occasionally. Strain the infused oil into a clean jar with a fine strainer or cheesecloth. Store in a cool and dry place and it will last up to a year. Check out this how-to we found on Pinterest.

A coffee scrub is a MUST in your shower. The smell of the coffee beans wakes you up and the texture is a perfect exfoliant to scrub off dead skin cells to leave your skin silky soft. We love this recipe by LivingWellMom.com. All it takes is some coffee, brown and white sugar, a bit of argan oil and refined coconut oil (essential oils are optional – orange might be cool). Mix these all together for a treat your skin will thank you for. Check out this Chai Sugar Scrub recipe, too!

For all our pumpkin spice lovers, there’s a pumpkin spice lip scrub! You get the taste of the everyone’s favorite seasonal spice without the added calories. All you do is mix sugar, coconut oil, and pumpkin spice seasoning. It’s the perfect scrub to make those lips soft through the “colder” months. And for a cute gift idea, share your creation in personalized balm jars or tins !
