Give Back this Holiday Season

Give Back this Holiday Season

Although volunteering and giving back to your community should be on your agenda year-round, most of us struggle with finding the time. Since the holidays are about goodwill, they’re the perfect time to plan a day or two to give back to your community.

There are hundreds of ways to give back to your community. We’re sharing a few ideas that should be accessible and enjoyable.

Spend time with the elderly. Make sure to make time for your grandparents or visiting your aging neighbors just to say hello and that you are thinking about them. Or volunteer at a senior center. Accompany your senior friend to the grocery store, doctor’s office, or take them to the park or a spa day! Everyone needs human companionship and it really can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Organize a yard sale with some family members or your neighborhood to raise money for a charity you’re passionate about. The holidays are the perfect time to clean out your home and/or closet (especially if it doesn’t “spark joy”).

Buy gifts from companies that give back: Patagonia, MAC Cosmetics, Sephora, STATE Bags, TOMS, The Giving Keys, Pura Vida, Diff Eyewear, Hiptipico, FEED and so many more companies match your purchase or contribute a portion of the sales to a charitable cause.

Donate to your local toy drive! The next time you’re out on a holiday shopping spree, pick up an extra toy or two and donate it to a local toy drive. One Colorado is hosting a toy drive for Union Station Homeless Services. Bring your gift December 8th to our Ornament and Gift Drive Get Together, or drop off new toys at Patagonia during store hours. Details forthcoming on our Events page. Pasadena Firefighters are also getting into the holiday spirit and collecting toys and sports equipment from November 14-December 24 + the City of Pasadena will have toy drive during their annual tree lighting on December 6th from 5-7p.

Speaking of Union Station, you can gather your friends to cook and serve a meal at Union Station’s kitchen or make snack lunches and drop it off to their family center. View other Union Station volunteer opportunities here.

Other ways you can help others in your community is by donating blankets or food, paying for someone in need of gas or groceries, or volunteering at an animal shelter. Whatever you choose, your generosity will be a special gift to someone else (and yourself).
