Plant a Tree for Earth Day!
Earth Day is on April 22nd and what better way to contribute to planet Earth than to plant a tree?! A tree is the perfect edition to your back (or front) yard that you never knew was missing. Improve the air your breathe and help create a more sustainable and beautiful place to live. There are so many beautiful trees to choose from; leafy trees, flower trees, fruit trees or berry trees! The choice is yours.
The best way to plant a tree is to find a sunny location in your back or front yard, or the parkway (the space between the sidewalk and the street). Make sure to take the location into consideration as well as the sun and climate. As the tree grows, imagine where the branches and shrubs will grow over time. If you have a smaller yard or flower garden, a smaller tree would work best.
First step is to dig a hole, two or three times bigger than the root ball of the tree. Loosen the soil with a pitch fork, so the roots and grow comfortably into the soil. Don’t use any fertilizer when filling the hole back up, because the fertilizer or compost stops the roots from growing into the natural soil.
After placing the tree in the hole, fill the soil half way and fill the area with water. Continue to add the soil until you reach the top. After this process you will need to create a circular mound around the tree, in case it rains, the water is kept inside the mound and reaches the roots.
Woot, that’s it! You just planted a tree in your yard and contributed to the planet! Don’t you feel good?
